In early 2010, I was just a few months into a job as a software
developer at the Shanghai Office of Slide Inc (acquired by Google
later that year), working on a highly viral social game. It was my
first real full-time job after officially leaving school, thought I
had already been programming for almost a decade by then.
One day it was time for one-to-one meetings. I was in a meeting room
with Mike, head of the office. I don't remember anything about the
meeting now, only it ended with his words "You are a professional, I
trust you." Out of meeting room, startled, thinking about it for
quite a while - Wow, I am a professional! I am usually a person who
don't take things seriously, particularly things related to
technology, internet, programming and myself. The idea of being a
professional sounded really cool & novel to me. I thought myself as
someone who just happened to like playing with code and could be
easily fullfilled by seeing my code in action.
The idea of being a professional software engineer just made me wow.
Since then I strive to do it like a pro for every occassion, with
extra effort when needed.
If you frequent Hacker News or Reddit and don't want to make
reading these sites your full-time job, you should absolutely install
Social Hotness. It's a Google Chrome extension that colors text
using different shades according to the vote/comment counts, like this
Hacker News with Social Hotness installed
Vanilla Hacker News
Links with high number of votes are colored with dark blue. Links with
high number of comments are colored with dark red. Yes, this is data
visulization, the most useful one I've ever seen. Now you can skim
through all those links on the page, finding the most voted/commented
at a glance, ignoring ones with less impact.
For the last few years, Hacker News & Reddit are the two sites I have
been checking multiple times a day, I have restraited, but still,
Multiple Times a Day (tm). One day I wrote a and have been using it
for two years, now I recommend it to you.
